1st Annual "Mission Pink" Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness Exceeds Expectation
More than 1000 people turned out for the First Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in Mission, October 17.
The 5-K walk/run sponsored by Mission Regional Medical Center, brought in people from across the state and our neighbors to the south. Some came from as far away as San Antonio, Houston, and Monterrey Mexico.
While the walk represents the first such event in Hidalgo County that advances the importance of awareness and early detection of breast cancer, it also raises vital funds for education and the treatment of breast cancer.
Walkers and event sponsors raised $32,000, with proceeds going to the Breast Care Center at Mission Regional Medical Center and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Studies show that one out of every eight women born today will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in their lives, according to the National Cancer Institute.
The Breast Care Center at Mission Regional Medical Center encourages you to obtain screening mammograms recommended for your age group, monthly self-breast exams, and annual physician exams to maintain proper breast health.
