The Sleeve Gastrectomy, also refered to as “Gastric Sleeve” surgery, may be an option for carefully selected patients undergoing bariatric surgical treatment, particularly those who are high risk, extremely obese, or BMI greater than 50.
The Gastric Sleeve involves the reduction of the size of the stomach, to 15% of its original size. The procedure reduces the size of the stomach.
Hunger is favorably affected because there is a reduced capacity to produce Ghrelin, a substance that plays a role in how you feel and relieve hunger. Patients feel full after a very small amount of food, and therefore lose weight because they eat less.
The procedure is performed laparoscopically and is not reversible. This is a restrictive surgery. There is no rerouting and no apparatus left behind. This surgery can be step 1 of 2 for gastric bypass surgery.
Like the Gastric Bypass, supplemental multivitamin, B complex vitamin, vitamin B12, calcium plus vitamin D, and iron must be taken for life. The sleeve gastrectomy would have the same possible complications as gastric bypass surgery.
