MISSION, TX (October 4, 2011) – Thousands gathered at Mission Regional Medical Center for the 3rd Annual MissionPink Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness Saturday, October 1. More than 2,000 people participated in the event.

Some were there to support loved ones, friends, the cause, some to celebrate their personal victories over the disease and yes, some to continue the battle against breast cancer.

Spirits were high and the energy was palpable. A sea of pink was visible from afar. Teams chanted, “We will beat breast cancer!”

Hundreds of children, teenagers and adults were enthused about the event contests. The winners of the Fastest Runner award were Alexis Medina (Children category), Will Ueckert (Teenager category) and Victor Silva (Adult category). Team “Zumba con Martha” was recognized as The Most Spirited Team. The Top Fundraising Team award was earned by team “Norma CAN-tu.” The creativity of team “Chi-Chi Sisters” paid off and earned them the Best Team T-Shirt award. More than 80 members made team “Bosom Buddies” the Largest Team.

The event could not have been possible without the support from many enthusiastic sponsors: Wal-Mart (Store 3320 – Palmhurst), BMP Radio (Digital 101.5 and 710 KURV News Talk), L&R Digital Print, El Periódico U.S.A., Periódico El Mañana, Sharylife magazine, Best Buy, Briarcliff Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center, H-E-B, Rehab Plus, Sharyland Plantation, SociaLife magazine, Spikes Ford, The Progress Times, A Healthy Living Home Health, Mission Chamber of Commerce, MRMC Radiologists, Peña Eye Institute and Pretty in Pink Boutique.

Monies raised go to support The Breast Care Center at Mission Regional Medical Center with twenty-five percent of the proceeds donated to Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure. A formal check presentation to the Houston-based organization will be scheduled later this month.

“As a non-profit organization, Mission Regional Medical Center is always proactive about engaging in activities that bring awareness to critical health issues affecting the community,” said Javier Iruegas, CEO, Mission Regional Medical Center. “And Mission Pink does exactly that – it reminds women to get themselves checked and schedule their annual mammograms.”

The Mission Pink event was the perfect way to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month and promote the mammography resources at The Breast Care Center. In addition, digital mammograms are offered at a discounted price for the month of the October for uninsured patients over the age of 40 including Radiologist’s fees.
