Mission Regional among the best in the nation at serving its patients and community, according to the Lown Institute
Mission, Texas / July, 2025– Mission Regional Medical Center, a member of the Prime Healthcare Foundation, has once again been recognized for outstanding social responsibility, receiving an “A” grade on the 2025-26 Lown Institute Hospitals Index.
This is the second time Mission Regional has received this honor, by achieving strong scores across various metrics of health equity, patient outcomes, and value of care, out of more than 3,500 hospitals nationwide.
In addition to the “A” on the overall social responsibility metric, Mission Regional also received “A” grades in the categories of patient safety, patient satisfaction, inclusivity, health equity, and patient outcomes, and according to the Lown Hospitals Index.
An example of social responsibility which greatly benefits the community is Mission Regional’s maternity outreach clinic, which provides prenatal care to underserved women who do not have the resources needed to obtain medical treatment. Staffed by nurses and medical assistants, the clinic provided care to 704 needy patients during 2023.
Another example of social responsibility which benefits the community are free screening mammograms which Mission Regional provides for uninsured women. The potentially life-saving screenings can help detect breast cancer at an earlier stage — when it is easier to treat the cancer. Funding for the free mammograms is generated by the annual “Mission Pink Walk / Run for Breast Cancer Awareness & Treatment” which is held in October.
“We are honored to have once again earned an A grade from the Lown Institute,” said Kane Dawson, CEO of Mission Regional Medical Center. “Maintaining the highest standards in serving our community is something we strive for day in and day out. By choosing our hospital, you can ensure that you receive the high-quality outcomes you rightly deserve.”
In addition to the “A” grade from the Lown Institute, Mission Regional has also received 10 straight “A” grades for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group, a national hospital ratings organization. These multiple awards are a testament to the consistent, excellent work of Mission Regional’s physicians, nurses and other healthcare workers.
Mission Regional’s sister hospital in the Prime Healthcare Foundation, Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, also received an “A” grade for overall social responsibility.
In its sixth annual rankings, the 2025-26 Lown Index evaluated hospitals on more than 50 measures–including novel metrics such as community benefit, racial inclusivity, and avoidance of over use. The Lown Hospitals Index for Social Responsibility is the only ranking to include metrics of health equity and value of care — in addition to patient outcomes — to create a holistic view of hospitals as total community partners.
The Lown Institute is a nonpartisan “think tank” which conducts healthcare research and generates ideas to improve the healthcare system. Data sources for the rankings include Medicare fee-for-service and Medicare Advantage claims; U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services patient safety data and hospital cost reports; and IRS 990 forms, among others.
These are independent rankings and hospitals do not apply or pay to be listed. Full methodology can be found on the Lown Index website at www.LownHospitalsIndex.org.
