As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month draws near, residents and businesses in the community are gearing up for the 5th Annual MissionPink Walk/Run at Mission Regional Medical Center. The pink event, set for Saturday, October 5th, has quickly become one of the biggest events for breast cancer awareness in the Rio Grande Valley.

Approximately 2500 walkers participated in last year’s MissionPink event. This year, organizers are preparing for 2800 participants. “People from all ages come to MissionPink,” says Evelyn Sáenz, Marketing Coordinator for Mission Regional Medical Center. “It is a very family-friendly event that brings people together from all over the Valley, and even from Houston, Reynosa and Monterrey.”

The MissionPink Walk attracts those passionate for the cause, like Rebecca Grimes from Mission. Grimes has been the team leader for the event’s Largest Team award for the past 3 years. “I am running for some amazing women who have been affected by breast cancer– My grandmother, my cousin and my aunt, whom we lost. Also, for two of my cousins, who are both survivors. And for another cousin who is currently fighting Breast Cancer.”

A portion of the proceeds from this year’s walk will provide free digital screening mammograms to local, uninsured women over 40. The remaining will benefi¬t The Foundation at Mission Regional Medical Center to support the hospital’s Breast Care Center and other charitable needs.

“Mission Regional Medical Center is grateful for the support and leadership of our sponsors, participants, staff and volunteers in this year’s MissionPink Walk/Run. Every year more and more people come and join us in this worthwhile and noble fight. This year promises to be the biggest yet,” said Javier Iruegas, CEO of Mission Regional Medical Center. “Together, our community is truly making a statement in support of preventing and treating this devastating disease. I look forward to joining family and friends on October 5th for a day full of fun and fitness to help in the battle against breast cancer.”

People interested in participating can already register online at www.MissionPink.org. All registered walkers get a free MissionPink t-shirt. Packet pick-up is scheduled for Saturday, September 21st, from 9 am to 1 pm at Mission Regional Medical Center. People can also register in person during packet pick-up or the morning of the walk.
