Hospital receives 8th straight “A” for Leapfrog Safety Grade
Mission, Texas / May, 2024 – Mission Regional Medical Center, a member of the Prime Healthcare Foundation, has received another “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for the spring of 2024. This national distinction recognizes Mission Regional as being among the top hospitals in the nation in protecting patients from preventable harm and errors.
This is Mission Regional’s eighth straight “A” grade — meaning the hospital has received “straight A’s” for patient safety for four years in a row.
Mission Regional’s sister hospitals in Prime Healthcare, Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco and Harlingen Medical Center, also once again received an “A” grade.
In addition, Prime Healthcare is the only hospital system in the Valley which has consistently received the “A” grade award for patient safety over the past two years.
“We are honored to have earned a grade A on Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Score eight times in a row,” said Kane Dawson, CEO of Mission Regional Medical Center. “Quality care matters. By choosing a hospital within our system, you can ensure that you receive the high-quality outcomes you rightly deserve.”
The Leapfrog Group, a non-profit, independent national organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm. Rigorous measurements are employed to evaluate infection rates, surgical outcomes, and patient satisfaction.
“Everyone who works at Mission Regional Medical Center should be proud of this ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It takes complete dedication of at every level, and an ironclad commitment to putting patients first. I thank Mission Regional Medical Center, its leadership, clinicians, staff, and volunteers for caring so deeply for its patients and their safety.”
Cesar Guerra, RN, Chief Nursing Officer for Mission Regional Medical Center, said the hospital’s multiple awards for patient safety are a testament to the work of physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals who are dedicated to providing “the highest-quality healthcare to residents of the Rio Grande Valley – every patient, every time.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors, infections and injuries to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
