(Mission, TX) The Ride Safe Bike Safety Fair and Family Fun Ride drew a large crowd to Mission Regional Medical Center February 26.

Families took their little ones to learn about bike safety issues and have fun, too.

The Ride Safe event was the inspiration of Oscar Tijerina, MD, Emergency Medical Director, Mission Regional Medical Center. An avid cyclist himself, Dr. Tijerina has long been concerned about bike safety measures. “I have seen many bicycle accidents at our ER. Many could have be prevented if both cyclists and motorists learned safety techniques and shared the road,” said Tijerina.

Officers from Mission Police Department instructed the children on safe bicycling practices. Officer Romeo Ortega said, “We set up the obstacle course to remind them about the importance of staying on the left side of the road when traffic is present and paying attention to traffic signs.”

Red flash bicycle safety lights, t-shirts, and other giveaways were provided to all participants. All children received new helmets. Urgent Care 4U assisted with fitting the helmets to each child and Bike Masters performed free bike inspections.
