Back in 1995, the mammography department at Mission Hospital was a 10 x 10-foot room used as a dressing area, patient education area, filing room, exam room, and quality control office located inside the radiology department. Everything “mammography” was done in this tiny room.
With increased awareness of breast health and breast cancer screening, the average number of mammography patients per day doubled in three years! The need for a larger facility was obvious, and the decision was made to create the Breast Care Center that will not only provide mammography but many other breast cancer screening and breast cancer diagnostic procedures.
The new Center opened its doors in 1999 and is now located inside Mission Regional Medical Center in Doctors’ Plaza West. Our facility now performs about 360 mammograms a month, in addition to other breast screening and diagnostic services.
