Mammograms

A screening mammogram is an x-ray picture of the breast that can be used to check for breast cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms of the disease. The X-ray images make it possible to detect tumors that cannot be felt. The Mission Regional Breast Center offers digital mammography services.

Early Detection of Breast Cancer Saves Lives!

By regularly screening for breast cancer with a routine mammogram, treatment can be started earlier if cancer is found and possibly before it has spread. Results from randomized clinical trials and other studies show that mammographies have helped reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer among women ages 40 to 74, especially those over age 50.

Diagnostic Mammogram

Mammograms can also be used to check for breast cancer after a lump or other sign or symptom of the disease has been found. This type of mammogram is called a diagnostic mammogram. A diagnostic mammogram can also be used to evaluate changes found during a screening mammogram or to view breast tissue when it is difficult to obtain a screening mammogram because of special circumstances, such as the presence of breast implants.

When Should You Get a Mammogram?

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) recommends women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every 1-2 years. Women at a higher than average risk of breast cancer due to family history may need to start regular screening mammograms sooner. Talk with your physician about what’s right for you.
