Nuclear Medicine

Mission Regional Medical Center is committed to providing state-of-the-art technology and modern medical advancements to our patients. It is a modern procedure that is essential in many medical specialties, from pediatrics to cardiology to psychiatry.

Nuclear medicine safely uses painless and cost-effective techniques to image the body and diagnose disease. Unlike other imaging methods, nuclear medicine imaging is unique because it provides your doctor with information about both function and structure. It gathers medical information that would possibly require surgery, necessitate more expensive diagnostic tests or even be completely unavailable. This particular type of imaging procedure often identifies abnormalities very early in the progress of a disease, often much sooner than with other diagnostic tests.

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine uses a small amount of radioactive materials (radiopharmaceuticals) to diagnose and treat various diseases. The radiopharmaceuticals are detected in imaging by special types of cameras that work with computers to provide very precise images about the area of the body being examined. During treatment, the radiopharmaceuticals go directly to the organ being targeted. The amount of radiation in a typical nuclear imaging procedure is comparable with that received during a standard diagnostic X-ray. The amount received in a typical treatment procedure is always kept within safe limits.

New and innovative nuclear medicine treatments that target and pinpoint molecular levels within the body are revolutionizing our understanding of and approach to a range of diseases and conditions.
