(Mission, TX) During National Nurse’s Week, nurses at Mission Regional Medical held a food drive at the hospital to help the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley. National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6 through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
The food drive was a great success and 400 pounds of canned and non-perishable food were collected for Mission families in need.
“Our nurses are always very generous not only with the care they provide to our patients but with various charitable efforts in our community. This time we far exceeded our wildest expectations,” said Kerri Jenkins, Chief Nursing Officer. “With the individuals across our community hurting from the weak economy this year’s food drive took on an even greater significance. Our employees’ caring hearts don’t just touch their work with each patient, but reaches out beyond our hospital’s walls as well.”
But the RGV Food Bank was not the only organization that benefited from the nurses’ generosity. More than $500 were collected in cash donations for the Comfort House in McAllen. The Comfort House is a ten-bed homelike residence where people in terminal stages of illnesses receive round-the-clock care on a donation-only basis.
