Mission Regional Medical Center’s Joint Replacement Institute has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for hip and knee replacement surgery by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety. In earning the Gold Seal of Approval, Mission Regional Medical Center becomes the first and only hospital in Hidalgo County with such a distinction for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement.

Mission Regional Medical Center underwent a rigorous on-site survey on April 26th, 2012. A team of Joint Commission expert reviewers evaluated Mission Regional Medical Center for compliance with hip and knee replacement standards of care specific to the needs of patients and families, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management.

“In achieving Joint Commission Certification, Mission Regional Medical Center has demonstrated its commitment to the highest level of care for its patients with hip and knee replacement,” says Jean Range, M.S., R.N., C.P.H.Q. executive director, Disease-Specific Care Certification, The Joint Commission. “Certification is a voluntary process and I commend Mission Regional Medical Center for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate its standard of care and instill confidence in the community it serves.”

“With this additional Joint Commission Certification, we continue demonstrating the significant investment in programs and services we offer our community. The Joint Commission Gold Seal provides us with a proven framework to take our organization to the next level and helps create a culture of excellence. Achieving The Joint Commission Certification in hip and knee replacement, is a major step toward raising the bar in our region for clinical excellence and continually improving the care we provide,” said Javier Iruegas, CEO, Mission Regional Medical Center.

The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification Program, launched in 2002, is designed to evaluate clinical programs across the continuum of care. Certification requirements address three core areas: compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and providing an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities. “It is an honor to lead the way in delivering high-quality care to our patients. Our hard work and dedication is reflected in obtaining certification for both our hip and knee replacement surgeries,” commented Maria Ester Rodriguez, RN, BSN, Project Leader.

Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission seeks to continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value. An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission is the nation’s oldest and largest standards setting and accrediting body in health care.
